Breast cancer treatment is a hard, long, and invasive process, and breast cancer survivors are true heroes. As part of treatment, many go through unilateral or bilateral mastectomy, losing their natural breast. The process usually continues, as many patients choose breast reconstructive surgery.

When it comes to breast reconstruction, nipple and areola enhancement are usually the last step for many patients. This treatment is a form of micropigmentation or medical tattooing where pigment is placed on the skin surface using nanotechnology.

This procedure can provide a natural-looking result, improve self-esteem, and reduce anxiety about the breast's appearance. It's a good option for those looking to enhance the appearance of their breasts after surgery and restore confidence. We are currently the only office on the Eastern Shore providing 2D & 3D areola tattooing.

3D Areola Restoration

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 2D Areola Micropigmentation?

2D Areola Restoration is a minimally invasive permanent makeup technique that helps restore the appearance of the areola after breast surgery. This service is for patients who have some dimension in their current nipple but would like additional color and texture. The patient may have undergone breast surgery where a nipple has been grafted by the surgeon. Breast reduction or augmentation surgery, and other traumatic events are examples of how color or part of the nipple may have been lost.

What is 3D Areola Micropigmentation?

3D Areola Restoration is an advanced permanent makeup technique that creates the illusion of a 3-dimensional areola and nipple on completely flat skin. Patients may have lost their nipple due to a mastectomy, breast reconstructive surgery or a traumatic event. This service can also help create the illusion of an ultra-realistic raised nipple as well as reconstruction of details including Montgomery glands, wrinkles & textures. This procedure can help eliminate additional surgeries like areola grafting.

How do I prepare for the service?

Patients must be at least 6 months post beast reconstructive surgery and be cleared by your surgeon before areola tattooing can be considered. A breast scar must be 18 months old & lighter than the surrounding skin in order to be camouflaged

There are several reasons when areola micropigmentation will need to be delayed or cannot be performed. You are currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Prophylactic chemotherapy is generally safe to proceed but recommend obtaining approval from oncologist. If you are currently on blood thinners, you may need clearance from your physician. Skin inflammation from certain dermatologic disorders including rosacea, eczema and psoriasis or an active sunburn.

What happens during the procedure?

The appointment may start with numbing using a topical aesthetic to minimize discomfort. Often, topical aesthetic is not necessary as many patients have nerve damage from prior mastectomy and the gentle nanotechnology usually does not cause much discomfort.

We will measure and outline your areola and nipple before starting micropigmentation. The inks used are carefully selected to create the most realistic appearance for each patient. We strive the create a shade that resembles the patient’s original areola and complements your skin tone.

The procedure usually takes 2.5-3 hours to complete depending on if we are providing a unilateral (one sided) or bilateral (both sides) areola & nipple. You may experience slight swelling and redness following the procedure. This should improve within 1 week depending on the sensitivity of your skin.

Is this covered by health insurance?

It is possible that some health insurance companies may cover the cost of nipple and areola tattooing, depending on your specific policy and coverage. However, it is important to note that this procedure is typically considered a cosmetic procedure and may not be covered by health insurance. We can provide documentation to help you claim reimbursement from your insurance company, depending on your out-of-network benefits. Overall, it is important to check with your insurance company to determine your coverage for this procedure.
